Algoz village lies within the County of Silves. Silves - the medieval residence and capital of the Moorish king of al-Gharb - has a superb castle and a highly dramatic approach, with its red ring of wall gradually revealing their course as you emerge from the wooded hills. The Moorish Fortress remains the focal point of Silves, dominating the town centre with its impressively complete set of sandstone walls and detached towers. Silves cathedral, sits below the fortress, built on the site of the Grand Mosque.
