Algoz
village lies within the County of Silves. Silves - the medieval
residence and capital of the Moorish king of al-Gharb - has
a superb castle and a highly dramatic approach,
with its red ring of wall gradually revealing their
course as you emerge from the wooded hills. The
Moorish Fortress remains the focal point of Silves,
dominating the town centre with its impressively
complete set of sandstone walls and detached towers.
Silves cathedral, sits below the fortress, built
on the site of the Grand Mosque.

municipal market.
There are shops on the main high streets and others within the
many narrow winding streets. The municipal market sells fresh fish,
meat,
fruits and vegetables and is open from Monday to Saturday.
Most of the major villages in the Algarve have a flea market and
bustling flea market takes place once a month (Algoz is on the second

The Algoz Railway station is very near the village centre. The train
travels all along the Algarve Coastal strip and
there are stops at most of the well know places.
A ride along the coastal strip is a perfect way
to absorb the Portuguese landscape at its best.
The next station from Algoz is Tunes and from here the more adventurous can
go to Lisbon for the day. The railways are a much cheaper way of traveling
in Portugal.
Algoz is famous for it orchards and exports its local produce. There are endless
network of country roads that run through the orchards and can be used to stroll
or cycle along. The walks are very peaceful and the air fresh.
Along most walks a stop at the local coffee shop is essential to take a break
and try some of their local traditional cakes.
A 20-30 minute walk from the village centre leads you to the Algarve Zoo which
is set among the Orange groves and along quite country roads.
